NEWS - December 2007

Latest statistics for HIV in Scotland to end December 2007

The most recent figures on new HIV infections have been released from Health Protection Scotland.

In the quarter 1 October to 31 December 2007, NHS Scotland laboratories reported 118 positive HIV-antibody test results for individuals not previously recorded as HIV-positive.

The cumulative total of known HIV-positive individuals in Scotland is now 5415, of whom 3942 (73%) are male and 1473 (27%) are female . At least 1553 (29%) are known to have died.

Of the 118 recently reported HIV-positive individuals, 82 (69%) are male, and 91 (77%) are aged between 25 and 44 years . The probable route of transmission was men who have sex with men (MSM) in 40 cases, heterosexual intercourse in 43 cases, and injecting drug use in 2 cases. Of the heterosexual cases, 32 probably acquired their infection abroad. For 32 cases, the transmission category is, as yet, undetermined. One case of mother-to-child infection was reported.

Of the total twenty eight of the cases were from Lothian, forty from Greater Glasgow & Clyde, eighteen from Grampian, and seven from Tayside.

See Health Protection Scotland Website

Cumulative cases of HIV in Scotland: 5415
Those not known to have died: 3882
It is estimated that 1/3rd of the people infected with HIV are unaware of their status.
This could mean that 1941 people are living with HIV in Scotland, and don't know it.

Testing and Prevalence

HIV prevalence in Scotland: 2006 update

The HPS April 2006 report looked at HIV infection among pregnant women in Scotland. Since the introduction of the policy of universal antenatal HIV testing in mid-2003, all women giving birth in Scotland are now routinely offered and recommended an HIV test. It reports that 12 (17%) HIV infected women who gave birth during January-June 2005 were undiagnosed prior to pregnancy and remained undiagnosed following it. These figures compare with 23% (3/13) for 2004, 50% (6/12) for 2003, and 65% (11/17) for 2002. HPS conclude that, “These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of universal antenatal HIV testing in reducing the numbers of HIV infected pregnant women who remain undiagnosed during their pregnancy.”

As a consequence of the implementation of Sexual Health Strategy policy to offer all attendees with an STI problem an HIV test, anonymous HIV testing was discontinued in all centres except that in Glasgow. The national figures below represent figures data collected prior to 2005.

In 2004, 32307 persons had at least one named HIV test. Of these, 326 (1%) were antibody positive.

Prevalence rates of HIV in Scotland had remained fairly steady over the past few years. However in 2004, of the 2576 Men who have Sex with Men (MSM) ) who had an attributable HIV test, 109 (4.2%) were antibody positive; the corresponding rates for 2001, 2002, and 2003 were 3.6%, 3.6% and 3.7%, respectively. The slight increase in prevalence overall was due to local increases in Lothian (5.7% in 2004 vs 5% in 2004) and Lanarkshire (8% in 2004 vs 3% in 2003).

A report Ten things to know about health in the ten new European Union members from the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe finds the HIV/AIDS profile of the Baltic States “extremely worrisome.” In particular the HIV prevalence rate in Estonia is now the highest in the EU at 1%. HIV/AIDS in Estonia is notable for several reasons. It has Europe's most rapid growth in HIV incidence, and the highest prevalence rate of the Baltic states – 1%. HIV transmission since 2000 has been rapid, with 90% related to injecting drug use. Among prisoners, 23% were HIV-positive in 2001.66 new cases of HIV infection were reported per 100000 population in 2002. (The average of the old 15 members is 4 per 100000)
