Researchers from Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) and Fenway Health have found that highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) does not completely suppress HIV in the semen of sexually active HIV-infected men who have sex with men (MSM). The findings, which currently appear on-line in AIDS, could indicate a potential transmission risk in MSM, who are highly susceptible to HIV infection.

Treatment as prevention is starting to work in parts of Africa

WHO guidance on protecting people living with HIV from TB

An estimated 910 000 lives were saved globally over six years by improving collaboration between TB and HIV services that protect people living with HIV from TB, according to global health impact figures released on 2 March. To follow up on the success of the 2004 initial guidance on TB and HIV, WHO also released an updated global policy for joint prevention, diagnosis and treatment of TB and HIV. TB is a leading killer of people living with HIV.

HIV and hepatitis – vaccination

Research conducted in the US and Spain shows that more needs to be done to ensure that people at risk of hepatitis A or B are vaccinated against these infections. UK HIV treatment guidelines recommend that all people with HIV should be vaccinated against hepatitis A and hepatitis B.

US CDC recommends HPV vaccine for young men

Young men and adolescent boys between the ages of 11 and 21 should be vaccinated against human papillomavirus, the cause of genital warts, anal and cervical cancer, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended. The committee also recommends that all gay and bisexual men and HIV-positive men aged 26 and under should be vaccinated.

WHO to issue guidance on hormonal contraceptives and HIV

The World Health Organization (WHO) will later this month issue further guidance on the reported link between hormonal contraceptives such as the pill, injectables, implants and HIV.

HIV in injecting drug users in the EU/EEA

In response to a notified increase in HIV cases among injecting drug users (IDU) in Greece and Romania, the European Commission asked the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) in November 2011 to conduct a rapid inquiry to HIV surveillance contact points and national drug focal points in the EU/EEA Member States, candidate and potential candidate countries. The aim was to investigate possible recent increases in HIV infections detected among IDU.
