The map shows the proportion of the HIV+ population in each region who had a CD4 count taken in 2010. During the period 1 October 2009 to 30 September 2010, a total of 3254 or 86% of HIV infected individuals attended specialist services for monitoring and treatment in Scotland.
Of these, 3154 had a CD4 count recorded, and 3134 were measured for viral load. Of the 372 cases who entered monitoring and recorded a CD4 count for the first time, 66 (18%) had a count <200 , 66 (18%) a count between 201 and 350, 98 (26%) a count of between 351 and 500, and 121 (33%) a count of > 500
A high CD4 count is an indication of a healthy immune system and a low count indicates the level of damage from HIV. A count of less than 200 can allow opportunistic infection and in general antiretroviral drug treatment would be prescribed at these low levels. CD4 count is usually combined with a viral load test to give a clear picture of the immune system.
