Our achievements

Scotland can claim a number of achievements in tackling HIV– harm reduction, increased testing, reduced undiagnosed, and excellent treatment services.

HIV Scotland has played a key role in all of these developments, based on leadership, knowledge and experience, innovation and partnerships.

Since 1995 HIV Scotland has provided expertise as a member of working groups which published the following key national strategies:

Policy and campaigning

HIV Scotland has taken a high profile role in the following policy areas:

  • HIV Infected Health Care Workers (1995 and 2005)
  • Criminal law and HIV transmission
  • Mandatory testing
  • HIV testing policy
  • Blood donations policy
  • HIV Manifesto campaigns for Holyrood and Westminster

HIV Scotland had an active role in developing the following standards and regulations:

  • Confidentiality (General Medical Council (GMC), 2009)
  • Confidentiality – supplementary guidance (GMC, 2009)
  • BHIVA standards
  • BASHH standards on testing
  • QIS Standards
  • Advice to Scottish Medicines Consortium - various

Our future aims

The next two to three year period will present real challenges and opportunities. The Scottish Government's Sexual Health and Blood Borne Virus Framework will bring together the policy areas of sexual health, HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B under one strategic framework. This will provide the backdrop to the HIV Action Plan, which demands concerted action on the part of HIV Scotland and our partner agencies.
